Our Story

For the woman who already knows who she is.

It was during her sister's wedding that the idea for Elaine began — though she didn't know it at the time.

She wasn't the bride. She was family. There were duties to fulfill, moments to be present for, a day that belonged to someone else. She wore a saree she loved, paired it with shapewear she thought would help, and showed up to participate in her sister's happiness.

By midday, the shapewear was digging in. By evening, it was unbearable. She adjusted. She shifted. She tried to stay present while her body was somewhere else entirely — distracted, uncomfortable, counting the hours until she could take it off.

Later, looking back at the wedding photographs, she realized something worse: the discomfort had been visible. Not in her face — she'd smiled through it. But in the way her outfit sat. The way the fabric didn't drape the way it should have. The small, quiet evidence that something wasn't right.

She mentioned it casually to a friend a few weeks later. Then another. Then another.

Almost everyone had the same story. A wedding where the shapewear hurt. A festival where it rolled. A family event where they spent half the day adjusting, the other half wishing they hadn't worn it at all. The details changed, but the experience didn't.

And then she remembered: she'd bought shapewear for her own wedding, too. It hadn't been right then, either.

That's when the question shifted. This wasn't a her problem. This was an everyone problem. And if it kept happening — across occasions, across brands, across years — maybe the problem wasn't the women wearing it.

Maybe the problem was the product itself.

Built for the wrong wardrobe.

Shapewear, as a category, was designed for Western bodies, Western garments, and Western wardrobes. It was built for bodycon dresses and pencil skirts — for fabrics that cling, for silhouettes that compress.

It was never built for the saree. For the pleats that need to fall a certain way. For the silk that drapes differently than cotton, and the Kanchipuram that weighs differently than chiffon. For the lehenga that sits at the waist for eight hours. For the salwar that moves when you do.

And it was never built for the occasions these garments are worn to. The all-day weddings. The back-to-back pujas. The family events where you can't slip away to adjust. The moments where you need to be present — not distracted by what you're wearing underneath.

No one was solving for that. So we decided to.

What Elaine is.

Elaine is shapewear designed for Indian women and the occasions we already own.

We don't sell transformation. We don't tell you your body needs fixing. We build support — for the saree you're already wearing, for the wedding you're already attending, for the woman you already are.

Our design philosophy is occasion-first. Different fabrics behave differently. A Banarasi silk saree doesn't drape like a Georgette. A Kanchipuram doesn't move like a Kasavu. The shapewear beneath it needs to understand that. So we map our fabrics to the garments and occasions they're meant to support — not to generic categories, but to real contexts.

We're regionally aware. India isn't one wardrobe. It's not one climate. A wedding in Kerala isn't dressed the same way as a wedding in Punjab. The heat in Chennai doesn't behave like the winter in Delhi. Elaine is built with that specificity in mind — not as an afterthought, but as the foundation.

And we're committed to quality that respects the garment it's worn beneath. If you're wearing silk that costs more than the shapewear, the shapewear should honor that. It should disappear. It should let the saree do its work. It should let you be present.

How we're building.

We're building Elaine the way we wish more brands were built — education before sales, authority before product.

The journal exists to share what we've learned: how fabrics behave, how occasions differ, what actually works when you're getting dressed for a wedding that starts at 10 AM and ends at midnight. We write the articles we wish had existed when we were searching for answers ourselves.
